Sidney Side Table

The Sidney is made from solid acacia rather than mango, and the difference is worth knowing before you buy. Acacia is a denser, harder timber with a tighter grain and more contrast between light and dark bands. It takes knocks better than mango and it has more figure in it — which means more character, and also more variation between one piece and the next.

At 50 centimetres square and 55 tall it is a straightforward side table: big enough for a lamp and a drink, small enough to move with one hand.

Where it works

Beside a sofa or armchair, at the end of a bed, or as a bedside table. At 55cm it sits above most sofa arms, so a lamp on it casts light over the seat rather than at the side of it.

Acacia suits rooms with warm tones — brass, terracotta, dark leather. Against cool greys the honey and chocolate banding can look out of place, which is worth considering if the rest of your room is on the cooler side.

Questions people ask

How is acacia different from mango? Harder and denser, with more contrast in the grain. It resists dents better and looks busier.

Will two pieces match? Closely but never exactly. Acacia varies more than most timbers, which is the appeal.

Does it need oiling? Not routinely. An occasional wipe with a dry cloth is enough.

Is it heavy? Denser than mango but small — one person can move it easily.

Does it match the Sidney console? Same timber and finish; the console is 120cm wide and 76cm tall.
