Solid acacia rather than mango, which changes what you get. Acacia is denser and harder, with a tighter grain and stronger banding between light and dark. It takes knocks better — worth something in a hallway, where furniture gets caught by bags and coats — and it has considerably more figure in it, so no two pieces look the same.

At 120 centimetres wide and 40 deep it is a full-length console on a narrow footprint: enough surface for two lamps or a lamp and a bowl, without eating the corridor.

Where it works

Against a hall wall under a mirror is the standard answer and a good one. The better-kept secret is behind a sofa that sits away from the wall — at 76cm it clears the back of most sofas, and two lamps on a console behind the seating will change a room more than any other single change at this price.

Acacia suits warm rooms — brass, leather, terracotta, dark green. Against cool grey the honey-to-chocolate banding can jar, which is worth thinking about before ordering.

Will it fit my hallway? Measure the corridor and subtract 40cm. Under 70cm left and it will feel tight.

How is acacia different from mango? Harder, denser, more grain contrast. Better at resisting dents, busier to look at.

Will it match the Sidney side table? Same timber and finish. Acacia varies naturally between pieces.

Is it stable with weight at the ends? Yes, though as with any long shallow table, heavy items sit best over the legs.

Does it need wall fixing? Not for normal use; sensible if young children climb.
