Bentley Parquet Console Table

A console table is defined by what it is not: it is not deep enough to be a desk and not low enough to be a coffee table. At 40 centimetres front to back, the Bentley is narrow enough to live in a hallway without turning it into a squeeze, and at 75cm tall it sits at the height where a lamp, a bowl and a set of keys land naturally.

The herringbone top is the piece of it people comment on. Timber laid at opposing angles reflects light in two directions at once, so the surface has depth that a plain board does not — and in a hallway, which is usually the least generously lit room in a house, that matters more than it would anywhere else.

Where it works

Against a hallway wall under a mirror is the obvious one. Less obvious and often better: behind a sofa that floats in a room rather than sitting against a wall. A console at 75cm sits just above the back of most sofas and turns an awkward gap into a place for lamps — which is the cheapest lighting improvement available in a room with one overhead fitting.

It also works as a dressing table in a bedroom too small for a real one.

Questions people ask

Will it fit a narrow hallway? At 40cm deep it leaves most hallways walkable. Measure your corridor width and subtract 40 — if what is left is under 70cm, it will feel tight.

Is it stable enough for a heavy lamp? Yes. Place heavier items over the legs rather than mid-span, as you would with any long, shallow table.

Does it need fixing to the wall? Not for normal use. If you have young children who climb, wall-fixing any tall narrow furniture is sensible.

Will it match the Bentley coffee and lamp tables? Same top construction and leg finish; natural timber varies a little in tone.

Can it take a television? It is a console rather than a TV unit — no cable management and 40cm of depth. A small screen would fit; we would not recommend a large one.
