Description

The Sidney Coffee Table is a solid acacia wood table, 120cm long, 60cm deep and 40cm high. Those are the proportions of a coffee table that works rather than one that looks good empty: long enough to serve a three-seater from end to end, deep enough to take a tray and a stack of books side by side, and low enough at 40cm to sit just below the seat height of most sofas so you are reaching down to it rather than across.

Acacia wood

Acacia is one of the harder furniture timbers — denser than oak and considerably harder than pine — which is why it turns up on tables that have to take mugs, feet and children. The grain is strongly figured with warm honey and darker chocolate tones running through the same board, so every top is different. It is the sort of timber that looks better after a few years than it does on the day it arrives.

Treat it as you would any solid hardwood: wipe up spills rather than leaving them, use a mat under anything hot, and keep it out of the direct path of a radiator. It does not need much beyond that.

Getting the height right

A coffee table should sit level with or slightly below your sofa seat. Most sofas have a seat height of 40 to 47cm, and the Sidney is 40cm, so it will sit right with the great majority. If your sofa is a low modern design under 40cm, the table will sit proud of the seat — which some people like and some do not. Measure yours before ordering.

Questions we are asked most

Is it big enough for a three-seater sofa?

Yes. The rule of thumb is a coffee table roughly two-thirds the length of the sofa. At 120cm the Sidney suits sofas from about 170cm to 210cm, which covers most two and three seaters.

How hard-wearing is acacia?

Very. It is harder than oak on the Janka scale, which is the reason it is used for chopping boards and outdoor furniture as well as tables. It will still mark if you drag something sharp across it — all timber does — but it resists dents better than most.

Will the colour match the photographs exactly?

No, and that is worth knowing before you order. Acacia is strongly figured and every board is different; the tones run from honey to dark chocolate within a single top. The photographs show the range, not a guarantee.

Does it come assembled?

No. It arrives flat packed with the top, the legs and a fixing kit, and goes together in a few minutes with an allen key.
