Colwell Armchair
Kyoto’s best-selling chair, and it is not hard to see why. Exposed wooden arms and curved legs put it in a tradition that runs back a century — the arm you rest a hand on is wood rather than fabric, which is both more hard-wearing and the detail that stops the chair reading as a soft block.
Four fabrics, and they take the chair to four different places. The textured linen stripe is the classic and the most forgiving in a busy house. Antheia cream linen is the quiet one. Meadow print is a botanical — the chair as a piece of pattern in a plain room. Terracotta distressed chenille is the warm, saturated option that works against dark green or deep blue walls.
Where it works
At 69.5 centimetres it is a compact armchair, which is part of why it sells: it fits a bay, a bedroom corner, or the end of a sofa without crowding. Exposed wooden arms also mean it does not visually swallow the space a fully upholstered chair does.
If you are buying two, the stripe and the cream are designed to sit together.
Caring for the fabric
Vacuum weekly with a soft upholstery head — grit is what wears upholstery, not use. Blot spills from the outside of the mark inwards and never rub. On the pale linens, a fabric protector applied before the chair goes into service is worth more than any treatment applied after the first accident.

Delivered free to mainland England and Wales. We do not currently deliver to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland or the offshore islands.
Questions people ask
Are the arms comfortable being wood? They are shaped rather than square-edged. Most people find them comfortable; if you like to drape an arm over a padded rest, choose the Briar instead.
Which fabric wears best? The stripe. Pattern hides far more than plain.
Is there a two seater? Yes — the Colwell 2 Seater, in stripe or cream.
Is it easy to get out of? At 90cm high with firm wooden arms to push on, yes — better than most low-armed chairs.
Does it need assembly? The legs attach.
