The Colwell armless chair takes the shape of our popular Colwell armchair and removes the arms, leaving a neat, upright slipper chair that fits where a full armchair cannot. It has a tall, squared back cushion finished with fine piping, a deep box-edged seat cushion and a fully upholstered base that sits on a shaped wooden rail with four gently curved, cabriole-style legs in a soft oak-effect finish. The look is quietly traditional, with clean lines that keep it from feeling fussy.

It comes in three fabrics that suit country, coastal and modern classic rooms alike: a plain cream linen, a blue botanical print and a grey-and-cream ticking stripe. All three are in stock at Kyoto now, so this is one of the quickest chairs in our range to reach you.

Design and comfort

A chair without arms depends on a good seat, and Colwell’s is generous: a thick foam cushion with a crisp box edge sits on an upholstered platform, and the back cushion is tall enough to support your shoulders when you lean back. The seat is set at a comfortable upright height, so it is easy to sit down on and get up from, which makes it a practical choice for a bedroom or hallway as well as a living room.

With no arms you can sit sideways, tuck a leg up, or perch on the edge to fasten shoes. That freedom is why armless slipper chairs have been a bedroom staple for generations. At 58cm wide, Colwell is narrower than most armchairs, so two will sit comfortably side by side in front of a window or either side of a console table, and one will slot beside a bed or dressing table without crowding the room.

Choose your fabric

• Antheia Cream Textured Linen: a soft, pale cream with a natural slubbed linen texture and matching piping. It is the most versatile option, calm against white, sage, stone or warm grey walls and easy to dress up with a cushion or throw.
• Meadow Print Natural: a delicate blue botanical print of leaves, grasses and flowers on a cream ground. It brings a fresh, English-country feel to a bedroom or sitting room and pairs well with navy, duck-egg and natural wood.
• Gaia Natural Textured Stripe: wide grey and cream ticking-style stripes on a textured weave. It has a relaxed coastal or farmhouse character and adds pattern without strong colour, so it works beside a plain sofa.

All three fabrics are also offered on the Colwell armchair, and the cream linen and natural stripe on the Colwell 2 seater sofa, so you can build a coordinated room a piece at a time. To keep the fabric looking its best, vacuum it regularly with a soft upholstery brush, keep it out of strong direct sunlight, and blot spills straight away with a clean, dry cloth rather than rubbing.

• Bedroom: a place to sit and dress, at the end of the bed, by a window or in front of a dressing table.
• Living room: an occasional seat beside a sofa, or a matching pair either side of a fireplace.
• Hallway or landing: a compact spot to sit and pull on boots where an armchair would block the way.
