The Ellis chair is a mid century armchair with an open wooden frame, flat armrests and a high, fully upholstered back. The seat and back are covered in Mercury Natural soft chenille, a pale oatmeal fabric with a fine, nubbly texture, and the frame has a light natural wood finish. Its clean, angular lines owe a lot to the classic Scandinavian lounge chairs of the 1950s and 60s, but it is sized for a modern UK home: 70cm wide, 86cm deep and 77cm high.

Design and comfort

The frame is the star of the piece. Two side frames rise from splayed, tapered legs to carry broad, flat armrests, which are wide enough to rest a forearm or a mug on. The seat cushion sits on a boxed, upholstered base suspended between the side frames, so the chair looks light from every angle and you can see the floor beneath it, which helps a small room feel open.

The back is tall and gently reclined. It supports your shoulders when you sit back with a book, while the deep seat lets you settle in rather than perch. The result is a relaxed but supportive seat that works as well for an hour of reading as it does for a quick sit-down with a coffee.

The fabric: Mercury Natural soft chenille

Mercury Natural is a soft chenille in a warm off-white, close to oatmeal or putty. The textured weave adds depth without pattern, and it sits beautifully against the honey tone of the wooden frame. It suits a Scandi or Japandi scheme with pale wood and linen, a warm minimalist room with stone and terracotta, or a more traditional sitting room where you want something calm and light.

To keep it looking fresh, vacuum the upholstery regularly with a soft brush attachment, keep the chair out of strong direct sunlight, and blot any spill straight away with a clean, dry cloth rather than rubbing it in.
