Inca Lounge Chair — Ribbed Walnut Frame

The Inca is a low, wide occasional chair — a scooped seat and curved back carried on a shaped timber frame left fully exposed. The frame is the design; the upholstery sits inside it rather than over it. That makes it lighter to move than it looks and easier to live with in a small room, because you can see through and under it.

This is the ribbed walnut version, and it is a markedly different chair from the pale washed-frame Inca. The walnut is dark and the frame is ribbed rather than smooth, so it catches light along its length. Where the washed frame disappears into a light room, this one asserts itself — it works against pale walls and pale floors, where it reads as a piece of sculpture rather than a seat.

Thetis Wine chenille is the one currently in stock, and it is the boldest fabric in the Kyoto range: a deep red that, against walnut, is unapologetically traditional in feel despite the contemporary frame. Thetis Olive and Achilles Brown PU are listed and can be ordered when Kyoto restocks — the stock figure on each option is live, so it will tell you what is available today.

Where it works

At 67 centimetres wide and 79 tall this is a small, low chair. It suits a bedroom corner, a landing, a bay or beside a fireplace. The low back makes it an occasional chair rather than a lounging one — comfortable for an hour with a book, not for a whole evening.

Caring for it

Chenille: vacuum weekly with a soft head, brush the pile one way if it looks patchy, blot rather than rub. Walnut frame: a dry cloth. Keep it out of sustained direct sunlight, which fades dark timber unevenly.

How is it different from the washed frame Inca? Same chair shape, darker ribbed frame, different fabrics. Washed suits dark rooms; walnut suits light ones.

Is it easy to rise from? Less so than an upright armchair — the seat is low. Worth considering for older users.
