The Skandi is a wooden bed frame that does a lot with very little. A headboard of wide horizontal rails with two open slots, softly rounded corners, a low footboard and four straight, square legs: that is the whole design, and it is exactly why it works. It takes its cue from mid-century Scandinavian furniture, where honest timber and clean lines do the decorating, and it suits everything from a calm Japandi bedroom to a family home with mismatched vintage pieces.

The frame is made from solid rubberwood in a warm, rustic mid-oak finish, sealed under a clear lacquer so the natural grain stays visible and the surface is protected from everyday knocks and marks. It is supplied by Kyoto, the Lincoln-based furniture specialist, and it comes in four sizes from single to king.

Design details

• Slatted mid-century headboard: wide rails separated by open slots give a light, airy look and make a natural backrest when you sit up to read.
• Rounded corners: the top of the headboard and the footboard posts are softened, so there are no sharp edges to catch a shin in the night.
• Low footboard: the frame is framed at the foot without blocking the view across the room, so it suits smaller bedrooms too.
• Slatted base included: a solid wooden slatted base lets the mattress breathe. Just add a mattress in the matching UK size.
• Raised legs: straight square legs lift the frame clear of the floor, which keeps the look light and leaves room for low under-bed boxes.

Styling the Skandi bed

The mid-oak tone sits happily against deep blues, sage and forest greens, warm whites and terracotta. For a pared-back Scandi look, pair it with white or oatmeal linen, a chunky knitted throw and simple wooden bedside tables. For a warmer, more retro feel, add mustard or rust bedding, a patterned rug and a tapered-leg bedside cabinet. Because the headboard is open, it looks just as good against a painted feature wall as it does against plain plaster.

Choosing a mattress

Delivery is free to mainland England and mainland Wales, including Anglesey. The bed arrives flat-packed for self-assembly, so it passes easily through doorways and up narrow stairs.
