Briar Accent Chair

Sloped arms, a sprung seat and a deeply padded back cushion. The sloped arm is the detail that decides how a chair like this gets used: a vertical arm is something to sit beside, a sloped one is something to lean on. It is the difference between a chair you use for twenty minutes and one you fall asleep in.

Two fabrics, and they are genuinely different chairs. Natural Stripe is a woven stripe chenille on natural wood legs — lighter, more relaxed, and the stripe hides wear better than any plain fabric. Olive is a distressed chenille on dark wood legs, a heavier and more formal look.

Where it works

At 81 centimetres wide this is a broad, comfortable armchair rather than a narrow occasional one. It works as the chair opposite a sofa, in a bay window, or in a bedroom corner where it will actually get sat in.

A stripe is the most forgiving upholstery there is in a busy house — it disguises everything a plain fabric advertises. If this chair is going somewhere with children or pets, that alone is the argument for the natural stripe.

Chenille, and how to keep it

Chenille is a pile fabric — short tufts held in a woven base — soft to the touch and good at disguising light marks. The pile flattens where it is used most. Vacuum weekly with a soft upholstery head, brush the pile back one way if it looks patchy, and blot spills rather than rubbing.
