The Midland is a large L-shaped corner group: 306cm along the long run and 220cm along the return. That is the size that seats a family of five without anyone perching on an arm. The figure that matters most is the 103cm depth. It is deep enough to lie along rather than only sit on, and that is what separates a sofa people use every evening from one they sit upright in.

The design is deliberately plain: square block arms, a low 76cm back and a clean boxed edge to every cushion. Nothing on it dates quickly, so it works in a modern room or a panelled one, as the showroom photographs show.

Four velvet colours, all available to order

Plush velvet has a short, dense pile that shifts in the light, so a large sofa reads as shaped rather than as one flat slab of colour.

• Steel: a deep, cool grey. This is the colour in every room photograph on this page and on the plain-background image.
• Pebble Grey: a lighter, warmer grey for a brighter room.
• Buxton Navy Blue: a dark navy that looks almost black in the evening.
• Teal Green: a rich blue-green that makes the sofa the focal point.

Will it fit? Measure three things

A corner sofa is the piece of furniture people most often regret buying without measuring. Before ordering, check:

1. The two walls. You need at least 306cm on one wall and 220cm on the other, plus a little breathing room at each end.
2. The floor in front. Allow 103cm for the sofa itself and at least 60cm of walking space in front of the seat.
3. The route in. Measure your narrowest doorway, the turn at the top or bottom of the stairs and any tight hall corner. Measure doorways diagonally as well as straight across.

Mark the footprint on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day. On paper a corner group always looks smaller than it lives.

Living with velvet

Velvet is a pile fabric, so it shades: brush it one way and it looks darker, the other way and it looks lighter. That shifting is the fabric behaving correctly, not a flaw, and it is most of the reason velvet looks expensive under a lamp.

Brush the pile in one direction with a soft clothes brush to keep it even. Blot spills straight away, never rub, and let the pile dry before brushing it back into line. A rubber pet brush lifts hair quickly.
