Description

A corner sofa built at proper scale

At 306cm along one run and 220cm along the other, the Midland is a genuinely large corner group — the size that seats a family of five without anybody perching on an arm. The 103cm depth is the part that matters most: it is deep enough to lie along rather than only sit on, which is what separates a sofa people actually use from one they sit upright in.

Velvet, in four colours

Plush velvet has a short dense pile that shifts in the light, so a large sofa reads as shaped rather than as one flat slab of colour. Steel and pebble grey are the neutral choices; Buxton navy and teal green are for a room where the sofa is the colour and everything else works around it.

Swatch photographs for all four are in the gallery. Velvet is one of the fabrics a screen renders least reliably — if colour accuracy matters to you, ask us for a swatch before ordering rather than after.

Fire tested

Premium upholstery, UK fire resistance tested to the standard required for domestic furniture sold in Britain.

  • Depth: 103cm

This is a large piece. Please measure your access route — doorway widths, hall turns and stair landings — before ordering.

Care

Brush velvet in the direction of the pile with a soft clothes brush. Blot marks rather than soaking them. Pile shading with use is characteristic of velvet, not a fault.

Delivery

Free delivery to England and Wales mainland. We do not currently deliver to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland or the offshore islands.

Measure before you order

A corner sofa is the one piece of furniture people most often regret buying without measuring. Three numbers matter: the width of your narrowest doorway, the width of the turn at the top or bottom of your stairs, and the length of the wall the long side will sit against. Measure the doorway diagonally as well as straight across — a section that will not go through flat will often go through on its side.

Leave at least 60cm of walking space in front of the seat. On paper a corner group always looks smaller than it lives.

Living with velvet

Velvet is a pile fabric, so it shades — brush it one way and it looks darker, the other way and it looks lighter. That shifting is the fabric behaving correctly, not a flaw, and it is most of the reason velvet looks expensive under a lamp.

Brush the pile in one direction with a soft clothes brush to keep it even. Blot spills immediately, never rub, and let the pile dry before brushing it back into line.

Delivery

Delivered free to mainland England and Wales. We do not currently deliver to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland or the offshore islands. Large upholstery is delivered in sections wherever the design allows, which makes a narrow hallway or a turn on the stairs far less of a problem.

Questions people ask

Does velvet mark easily? It marks visibly but most marks are pile disturbance rather than staining, and brush out.

Will pet hair cling to it? More than to a flat weave. A rubber brush lifts it quickly.

Does the colour change in different light? Yes — that is the pile catching light at different angles. Expect it to look deeper in the evening.

Can I steam clean it? Not without checking the care label first. Heat and moisture can flatten pile permanently.

Is velvet a bad idea with children? Not at all, and it hides crumbs better than a flat weave. Deal with spills promptly.
