A fixed back, deliberately

The Hudson has a fixed, fully upholstered back rather than loose scatter cushions. It is the less fashionable choice and the more practical one. A fixed back keeps its shape without anyone plumping it, which matters in a room where the sofa is used every evening. If you have ever spent five minutes rearranging cushions before guests arrive, this is the sofa that stops that.

Double sprung seat

Under the seat cushions is a double sprung unit rather than webbing alone. Sprung seats cost more to build. They are the difference between a sofa that still sits level in year five and one that has a dip where everyone sits.

Square arms, low back

Simple squared arms and a 65cm overall height give the Hudson a low, horizontal line. That suits a smaller room: a low back keeps more wall visible above it and makes the space read larger than a high-backed sofa would.

Steel or Ebony Black?

Steel is the safer choice in most rooms. It is a grey with enough depth to hide everyday marks, and it sits happily with oak, white or grey floors. Ebony Black is the stronger look. It suits a monochrome scheme or a room with pale walls, where a dark sofa grounds the space. Black shows pet hair and dust more than grey does, so in a house with a light-coloured dog, Steel is the practical pick.

Planning the room

A 3 + 2 set is easier to place than a corner group, but it still needs planning. Measure the wall the 190cm three seater will sit against, then decide where the 170cm two seater goes. Facing each other works in a long room. At right angles works better in a square room and keeps the television in view from both. In a room under about 4m wide, a 3 + 2 is usually the better choice over a corner group because you can split the pieces.

Check your narrowest doorway and any turn on the stairs before ordering, and measure doorways diagonally as well as straight across.

Care

Vacuum weekly with an upholstery head. Turn and swap the seat cushions now and then so the two most-used seats do not wear ahead of the rest. Blot spills straight away rather than rubbing them.
