Description
A full-size guest bed that stands in a cupboard
The Jay-Be Contract Upright Hotel Guest Bed is the bed hotels, B&Bs and care homes keep in the linen store for the extra guest who turns up at reception. Unlike a folding bed, it does not fold in half at all. The 92 cm wide steel frame tips up on its end, with the mattress strapped flat against its solid wooden base, and stands on four heavy-duty castors in a footprint of just 92 × 54 cm. When you need it, one person tips it down, unclips two straps and the bed is ready. There are no hinges, scissor joints or springs in the frame to trap fingers or wear out.
That simple design is why it suits homes as well as hotels. If you have a box room, a deep under-stairs cupboard or a garage with a level floor, the Upright gives you a proper 92 cm single with an 18 cm deep hand-tufted mattress, which is noticeably wider and deeper than most folding beds, without a permanent bed taking up the floor.
Three mattresses, one frame
The frame is the same on every version. Choose the mattress for who will sleep on it:
- Deep Sprung (201951): an open-coil spring unit with around 325 interconnected coils, topped with a performance wool layer and breathable e-Fibre™ comfort layers, all hand-tufted to keep the fillings in place. A traditional, supportive feel and the best value of the three.
- Deep Pocket Sprung (201905): individual pocket springs that move independently, so the mattress follows the shape of the sleeper rather than dipping as one. The choice for guests who stay several nights or anyone who sleeps on their side.
- Derwent Waterproof (201921): a sprung mattress finished in a blue, fully waterproof, breathable contract fabric that Jay-Be describes as hypo-allergenic and resistant to microbial growth, with side air vents. Built for care homes, hospitals, student lets and children’s sleepovers, where spills happen and the mattress must be wiped clean.
All three mattresses are 100% foam-free. The comfort layers are e-Fibre™, which Jay-Be makes from recycled plastic bottles and which can be recycled again at the end of the mattress’s life. The cover fabric on the Deep Sprung and Pocket Sprung versions is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified.
Built for contract use
The frame is mild steel with a hard-wearing epoxy powder-coated finish that wipes clean and resists scratches from trolleys and door frames. The mattress rests on a solid-top base made from FSC®-certified wood, so it is supported evenly across its whole width instead of sagging between slats or a mesh. A wooden headboard stops pillows falling off the end. Jay-Be’s spec sheet gives a recommended maximum user weight of 190 kg, higher than its domestic folding beds. The legs double as handles when you lower or raise the bed, and Jay-Be designs the bed to fit through a standard doorway when upright.
When the bed is flat there is about 24 cm of clear space under the frame. That is enough for a guest’s suitcase, and it also makes cleaning underneath easy, which matters to housekeeping teams.
Upright, folding bed or Crown?
If you only need a guest bed a few times a year and want it to tuck behind a door, a TC80 Tourist or Quick 80 cm folding bed folds smaller and costs less. The Crown Premier and Crown Windermere are Jay-Be’s other contract beds, at 76 cm wide. The Upright is the widest Jay-Be single guest bed at 92 cm and the only one with a solid wooden base and no folding mechanism. For a wider guest bed that still folds, see the J-Bed.
Storage cover and mattress protector
Each mattress is available on its own or with Jay-Be’s fitted storage cover for the upright bed, a waterproof mattress protector made for the Upright mattress, or both. The storage cover keeps dust off the mattress between guests, which is worth having if the bed lives in a garage or loft room. The protector guards the mattress against spills while it is in use.

Frequently asked questions
How much room does it need when stored?
A floor area of 92 × 54 cm and 196 cm of height. Check the height of your cupboard or alcove, and the door opening, before you order. It is designed to pass through a standard internal doorway when upright.
Can one person put it up and take it down?
Yes. Put a foot against the base, pull the top of the frame towards you using the legs as handles, and let it pivot down onto the floor. Then release the two mattress straps. Raising it is the same in reverse. Jay-Be’s illustrated instructions are linked below.
Is it comfortable enough for an adult to use every night?
It is designed as a contract bed for hotel guests, so yes for regular use. The 18 cm hand-tufted mattresses are much deeper than a typical folding-bed mattress. For nightly use we recommend the Deep Pocket Sprung version.
Which mattress should a care home choose?
The Derwent Waterproof. Its cover is fully waterproof and wipe-clean, and Jay-Be states it resists microbial growth, so it can be cleaned between residents. Add the mattress protector if you also want a removable, washable layer.
Can I put the bed on carpet?
Yes. The 3 in castors roll on carpet as well as hard floors, though they move most easily on a hard surface. Keep the bed upright on a level floor so it stays stable when stored.
