The J-Bed Single: a folding bed that sleeps like a real bed

The Jay-Be J-Bed® Single is the folding bed people buy when a camp-bed compromise will not do. It opens out to 96 × 204 cm, which is wider and longer than a standard 90 × 190 cm single, and it rests on a traditional sprung slatted base rather than a fabric sling or mesh deck. The result is a guest bed for one adult, with more width than an ordinary 90 cm single, that still folds upright on castors to just 38 cm deep when the room is needed back.

It is supplied with Jay-Be’s Contract Comfort mattress (sold on Jay-Be’s own site as the Performance Comfort White): a 10 cm, 100% foam-free e-Fibre™ mattress in a high-performance woven cover, made to meet the fire-safety requirements for contract use. That makes the J-Bed a dependable choice for guest houses, holiday lets, B&Bs and hotels as well as homes.

How it works

The J-Bed uses Jay-Be’s J-Lok™ mechanism: you open and close the bed one side at a time, so one person can set it up without lifting the whole weight of the frame. Folded, it stands on four 360° castors and rolls to a cupboard, under-stair space or the corner of a study. The full-width headboard and the footboard are finished in an oak effect; the headboard keeps pillows on the bed and the footboard stops the mattress creeping during the night.

The frame is lightweight anodised aluminium, which keeps the bed easy to move for its size. The hinges and corner fittings are precision injection-moulded, which keeps the action smooth and the bed square when it is open.

The mattress

e-Fibre™ is Jay-Be’s foam-free filling. Its open structure lets air move through the mattress, so it stays fresher in storage than foam and sleeps cooler. It is hypoallergenic and free from harmful chemicals and VOCs, and Jay-Be makes its e-Fibre™ support layer from recycled plastic, which is itself 100% recyclable at the end of its life. The high-performance cover gives the mattress its extra fire resistance and durability, which is why it is the mattress Jay-Be specifies for contract beds.

Delivery

Free delivery to mainland England and mainland Wales, including Anglesey, by courier to your door. The bed arrives fully assembled with the mattress fitted, so there is nothing to build: unpack it, unfold it and make it up. We do not deliver to Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight or the Isles of Scilly.

How big is the J-Bed Single compared with a normal bed?

Open, it measures 96 × 204 cm. A standard UK single is 90 × 190 cm, so the J-Bed gives 6 cm more width and 14 cm more length. That extra length is what makes it comfortable for taller guests.

How much storage space does it need?

Folded, it is 96 cm wide, 38 cm deep and 112 cm high, standing on its castors. Measure the cupboard or alcove you have in mind, and allow a little extra width to wheel it in.

Can it be used in a hotel, B&B or holiday let?

Yes. The Contract Comfort mattress is made specifically to meet the legal fire-safety requirements for contract use. The aluminium frame carries Jay-Be’s lifetime frame guarantee.

Can someone sleep on it every night?

The sprung slatted base gives proper support, so it is suitable for longer stays. For nightly use most people prefer the deeper pocket sprung version of the J-Bed, which uses the same frame.

Does it need assembling?

No. It arrives assembled with the mattress already in place. Open it one side at a time using the J-Lok mechanism and it is ready to make up.
