Two things separate the Finn from a conventional recliner, and both change how it is used.

The back and the footrest move independently. On most recliners one lever or one button does both — the further back you go, the further up your feet come, and you take whatever combination the mechanism gives you. Here they are on separate buttons. You can put your feet up while sitting upright to watch something, or lie the back down without raising the footrest at all. Anyone who has ever wanted one without the other will understand immediately why that matters.

It swivels. That earns its place in a room where the seating has to do two jobs — face the television, then turn to face the room when people arrive — without dragging the chair across the floor.

Before you order

Measure your narrowest doorway, diagonally as well as straight across. Allow 30 to 40cm of clearance behind the chair to recline — this is not a wall-hugger — and leave room in front, because an extended footrest projects further than most people picture.

A swivel chair also needs clearance to turn. Allow the width of the chair plus a few centimetres all round, and bear in mind the base will mark a soft wooden floor unless you use a rug or felt pads.

Chenille, and how to keep it

Chenille is a pile fabric — short tufts held in a woven base — soft to the touch and forgiving of light marks. The pile flattens where it is used most, which on a recliner means the seat and the headrest. Vacuum weekly with a soft upholstery head, brush the pile back one way if it starts to look patchy, and blot spills rather than rubbing.

Questions people ask

Can I raise the footrest without reclining the back? Yes — that is the point of the independent controls.

Does it need a plug socket? Yes, it is mains powered.

Does it return to face forward on its own? No. It stays where you turn it.

Is it steady for someone pushing up from the arms? The base is weighted, but any swivel chair moves more than a fixed one. If that matters, the Baxter recliners are fixed-base.

What happens in a power cut? It stays where it is.
