A power recliner with a pocket sprung seat rather than foam alone, a plush backrest, traditional rounded arms and piping along the edges. The pocket springs are the part worth paying attention to: foam-only seats soften unevenly over a few years and develop a dip where the sitter lands. A sprung seat holds its shape considerably longer, which on a chair someone uses every evening is the difference between five good years and two.

Electric rather than manual means the recline is progressive — you stop wherever you like rather than at a fixed notch — and you do not have to push back against the chair to operate it. For anyone with limited strength or a bad back, that alone decides it.

Before you order a recliner

Three measurements decide whether a recliner works in your room, and only one of them is on the label. The first is the width of your narrowest doorway. The second is the clearance you need behind the chair to recline — allow a good 30 to 40cm unless the mechanism is a wall-hugger, which this is not. The third is the space in front, because a reclined footrest projects further than people expect.

The other thing worth knowing: a recliner is the one piece of furniture people buy for someone else, usually a parent. If that is the case here, seat height matters more than anything in the specification. A chair that is easy to rise from beats a chair that reclines beautifully.

Chenille, and how to keep it

Chenille is a pile fabric — short tufts held in a woven base — which is what gives it that soft, slightly velvety hand. It wears well and it hides light marks, but the pile flattens where it is used most, which on a recliner means the seat and the headrest.

Vacuum weekly with a soft upholstery head. Brush the pile back in one direction if it starts to look patchy. Blot spills, never rub — rubbing pushes liquid into the base and flattens the tufts permanently.

Questions people ask

Does it need a plug socket? Yes. It is mains powered, so plan where the chair sits relative to a socket.

What happens in a power cut? The chair stays where it is. If that concerns you, the manual Baxter is the safer choice.

How much room does it need behind? Allow 30 to 40cm to recline fully. It is not a wall-hugger.

Is it easy to get out of? Easier than a fixed armchair, because you can raise the back before standing. It does not have a riser function that lifts you.

Which fabric wears best? The chunky woven Aura fabrics have a firmer surface; the laundered Dionysus is softer to the touch. Both are chenille and both flatten with use at the seat.
