Micky Swivel Chair

Curved arms and a curved back, upholstered in a chunky textured bouclé and set on a swivel base. There is not a straight line on it, which is the point — in a room full of rectangles, one curved object does more work than any amount of colour.

Three colours, and they are not interchangeable. Natural is the safe one and the one that photographs best. Navy is the anchor — it works where a neutral would vanish, particularly against pale walls. Olive is the one that reads as considered rather than chosen, and it sits well with natural wood and warm metals.

Why a swivel

In most living rooms the seating faces the television, which means that when people come round, half the room is looking at the back of someone’s head. A chair that turns serves both arrangements without anyone dragging furniture about. It rotates on a smooth plate rather than a ratchet, so it turns quietly and stops where you leave it.

Allow the width of the chair plus a few centimetres all round to turn, and use a rug or felt pads on a soft wooden floor — the base is weighted for stability and that weight will mark.

Living with bouclé

Bouclé is a looped yarn, and the loops are what give it that soft, nubbly surface. The texture hides light marks and creasing far better than a flat weave. The trade is that loops snag — a claw, a ring, a sharp zip. If a loop pulls, do not cut it: ease it back into the weave with a blunt needle or the tip of a pen. Vacuum with a soft brush head, never a beater bar, which is what tugs loops loose.

If you have a cat that scratches furniture, choose a different fabric. Claws and looped yarn are a poor combination and we would rather say so before you order.

Questions people ask

Does it spring back to face forward? No — it stays where you turn it.

Does it rock as well as swivel? It swivels only.

Is it steady for someone pushing up from the arms? The base is weighted, but any swivel chair moves more than a fixed one.

Will bouclé snag on a dog’s claws? It can. Dogs are less of a problem than cats, but a flat weave is safer with either.

How low is it? At 75.5cm it is a low, lounging chair rather than an upright one.
