Beatrice Swivel Chair

The Beatrice design on a turning base, and slightly reworked for it — bolder, more angular arms, and a marginally lower back than the fixed armchair. Textured linen panels with piping along the seams, framed by washed wood, and a pocket sprung seat rather than foam over webbing.

A swivel chair solves a specific problem. In most living rooms the seating faces the television, which means that when people come round, half the room is looking at the back of someone’s head. A chair that turns lets one seat serve both arrangements without anyone dragging furniture across the floor. It is the single most useful thing you can put in a room that has to be both a snug and a sitting room.

It rotates on a smooth plate rather than a ratchet, so it turns quietly and stops where you leave it.

Before you order

A swivel chair needs clearance to turn — allow the width of the chair plus a few centimetres all round, and do not push it into a tight corner where it can only face one way, which defeats the point.

The base is weighted for stability, and on a soft wooden floor that weight will mark. Use a rug or felt pads.

Textured linen mix, and how to keep it

A linen mix carries a visible slub — a slight irregularity in the yarn — which gives it texture rather than the flat face of a synthetic. It creases where it is sat on, and in cream it shows marks a patterned fabric would hide. Vacuum weekly with a soft upholstery head, blot spills from the outside of the mark inwards and never rub. A fabric protector applied before the chair goes into use is worth more than any treatment applied afterwards.

Questions people ask

Does it spring back to face forward? No. It stays where you turn it, which is what most people want in a living room.

Does it rock as well as swivel? It swivels only.

Is it steady for someone pushing up from the arms? The base is weighted, but any swivel chair moves more than a fixed one. If that is a concern, the fixed Beatrice Armchair is the safer choice.

How is it different from the Beatrice Armchair? Bolder angular arms, slightly lower back, wider seat — and it turns.

Will the base mark my floor? On soft wood, yes. Use a rug or felt pads.
