Description
A properly firm mattress, without the foam
Most mattresses sold as “firm” are really medium-firm once you lie on them. The Jay-Be Flex Ultra-Firm is built for people who want the real thing: a flat, supportive surface that holds its shape under heavier body weights and keeps your spine level instead of letting your hips sink. It pairs an ultra-firm sprung core with dense e-Fibre™ comfort layers, and it contains no foam at all. It is made in the UK by Jay-Be and arrives vacuum-packed and rolled, with a 10-year manufacturer guarantee.
Jay-Be rates the Flex Ultra-Firm, a step above its Firm-rated models such as the TrueCore Firm Hybrid. If you have been told to try a firmer bed for your back, if you sleep mainly on your back or front, or if you simply find most mattresses too soft and cushioned, this is the one to look at first.
What is inside, layer by layer
- Deep-quilted knitted cover – a smooth white knit made with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified fabric, quilted in channels so the surface stays even.
- Advance and firm e-Fibre™ comfort layers – a thin cushioning layer on top for a little give, then a firm fibre layer that stops you sinking through to the springs.
- Breathable rebound e-Fibre™ – springs back quickly when you move, so you do not end up lying in a dip.
- High-density (HD) e-Fibre™ insulator – a dense pad that sits over the springs, spreading the load and keeping the coils from being felt through the top.
- Ultra-firm sprung core – the heart of the mattress, tuned for robust support rather than softness.
- HD e-Fibre™ foundation layer – a firm base under the springs that adds stability on slatted frames and divans alike.
Every filling is fibre rather than foam. Fibre lets air move through the mattress, so it sleeps cooler than a dense foam block and helps moisture escape overnight. The fire-retardant treatment is natural and salt-based, the materials are hypoallergenic and odourless, and Jay-Be describes them as vegan-friendly.
Who it suits
- Back and front sleepers who need the hips held level with the shoulders.
- Heavier sleepers and couples who find standard mattresses dip in the middle or along the edges.
- Anyone advised to try a firmer mattress for back comfort. (We are not able to give medical advice. If you have a back condition, ask your GP or physiotherapist which firmness suits you.)
- Warm sleepers who want to avoid memory foam.
- People with dust or chemical sensitivities who prefer hypoallergenic, foam-free fillings.
It is not the right choice if you sleep mostly on your side and like to sink into the mattress. Side sleepers usually do better on a medium-firm model with more cushioning at the shoulder.
How it compares with other Jay-Be mattresses
The Jay-Be Ryze Deep Quilted uses a similar foam-free sprung build but is medium-firm, with softer quilting on top. It is the better pick for side sleepers and for guest rooms. The Ryze 800 Pocket Sprung uses individually wrapped springs, which helps couples who disturb each other when they move. If you want firm support with pocket springs and more layers, look at the TrueCore Firm Hybrid 2200. Of the four, the Flex Ultra-Firm is the firmest, and in a single it costs the same as the Ryze 800 and less than the TrueCore.

Unpacking and care
Carry the roll to the room where it will be used and lay it on the bed frame before you open it. Open the outer wrap carefully, taking care not to cut the cover, and let the mattress unroll. It takes shape within minutes, but give it 24 to 48 hours in a ventilated room to recover fully before you judge the feel. Rotate it head to foot every few weeks for the first three months and every couple of months after that. Use a breathable mattress protector to keep the cover clean and to protect your guarantee.
Delivery
Free delivery to mainland England and mainland Wales, including Anglesey, by courier to your door. The rolled pack is compact, so it is easy to get through narrow hallways and up tight stairs. We do not deliver to Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight or the Isles of Scilly.
Frequently asked questions
How firm is the Flex Ultra-Firm?
Jay-Be rates it Ultra-Firm, firmer than its Firm-rated mattresses. Expect a flat, supportive surface with only a thin cushioning layer on top. If you are used to a medium mattress, it will feel noticeably firmer for the first week or two.
Does it contain any memory foam or foam?
No. Every comfort and support layer is made from e-Fibre™ fibre filling around a sprung core. There is no memory foam or reflex foam anywhere in it.
What is the difference between the Flex Ultra-Firm and the Flex 1200 Pocket?
Jay-Be also makes a Flex version with 1200 individually pocketed springs and a ventilated 3D mesh border. The pocket version moves less when a partner turns over and costs more. This sprung Flex is the lower-priced way to get the same ultra-firm feel.
Is it good for a heavier person?
Yes, that is one of the main reasons people choose it. The ultra-firm core and dense fibre layers are designed to resist dipping under heavier body weights. Rotating it regularly will help it wear evenly.
Can I use it on a bunk bed or a children’s bed?
At about 21 cm deep it is too deep for most bunk beds and high sleepers, which usually need a mattress of 16 cm or less for the guard rail to work safely. It fits any standard UK single, small double, double or king bed frame, divan or ottoman of the matching size.
