The Clara is a corner sofa bed by Kyoto, built for rooms that have to work as a living room by day and a guest room by night. It has a long chaise with a storage space underneath, a pop-up bed that opens to a sleeping area 156cm wide and 218cm long, and an easy-clean woven fabric in Natural, Navy or Grey. The lines are straight and simple, and it sits on low black feet, so it looks right in a modern room without taking it over.

How the bed works

The Clara uses a pop-up mechanism rather than a click clack back or a fold-out metal frame. A sleeping section is stored under the seat. To make the bed you pull it forward and it lifts up level with the seat and the chaise, giving one wide, flat sleeping surface. There’s no mattress to lift out of the base, and you don’t need to move the sofa away from the wall. To put it away, lower the section and push it back under the seat.

At 156cm wide the bed is wider than a UK double (135cm) and a little wider than a UK king (150cm), so two adults can share it. At 218cm long it suits tall guests too. Plan for about 2.2 metres of clear floor in front of the back wall when the bed is open.

Storage under the chaise

Measure three things before you order:

• The wall it will stand against: you need at least 240cm.
• The depth at the chaise end: you need 167.5cm.
• The floor in front of the sofa: you need about 220cm of clear floor, measured from the back wall, when the bed is open.

The Clara arrives in three boxes and goes together in the room, so the largest box, not the finished sofa, is what has to get through your door and up the stairs. The whole sofa weighs 121kg, so plan for two people to carry and assemble it.

Does it need a separate mattress?
