Description
Alfie chair: a Scandi armchair on a solid ash frame
The Alfie chair is a compact Scandi-style armchair that shows off its frame rather than hiding it. A slim, solid ash frame in a washed oak finish wraps around the seat like an open timber cradle, with gently splayed legs, a cross-rail at each side and a slim wooden arm along the top. Inside it sits a softly upholstered seat and back in a grey linen-mix fabric, finished with a loose-look padded back cushion. It is the kind of chair that looks good from every angle, which matters when it is going to sit in the middle of a room or angled beside a window.
Alfie comes from Kyoto, the British furniture supplier voted Best Sofa Bed Supplier in the Furniture News Readers’ Choice awards 2026. It arrives fully assembled, so there is nothing to build: unbox it, put it in place and sit down.
Design and comfort
The seat and back are filled with soft, padded foam cushions, giving a supportive sit that keeps its shape rather than sinking. At 47.5cm the seat height is a comfortable, standard height for getting in and out easily, and the 46cm seat depth suits most adults sitting upright with a book or a cup of tea. The 54cm-wide seat leaves room to shift position without the chair feeling bulky, and the timber arms sit at 63.5cm, a natural height to rest an elbow on.
The exposed frame is the defining detail. Solid ash is a dense, hard-wearing hardwood with a clear, straight grain, and the washed oak finish gives it a light, natural tone that sits well with oak floors, pale walls and other Scandi or mid-century pieces. Because the legs are open and raised, the Alfie chair keeps the floor visible beneath it, which helps a smaller room feel less crowded.
The fabric
Alfie is upholstered in a soft grey linen-mix fabric with a gentle woven slub. In daylight it reads as a cool, airy grey with a hint of blue, and it pairs easily with white, cream, navy, sage and warm wood tones. Linen-mix fabrics give the relaxed, natural look of linen with a little more resilience for everyday use. To keep it looking its best, vacuum it lightly with a soft brush attachment and blot spills straight away with a clean, dry cloth.
Where it works
- Living room: as an occasional chair beside a sofa, or used as a matching pair either side of a coffee table or side table.
- Reading corner: angled next to a window or a floor lamp with a side table for a mug.
- Bedroom: a neat, good-looking chair for a bay window or the end of the room that will not take over the space.
- Home office or hallway: a comfortable guest chair that looks more like furniture than an office seat.

Delivery
Delivery is free to mainland England and mainland Wales, including Anglesey. We do not deliver to Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight or the Isles of Scilly. The Alfie chair arrives fully assembled in a single box, and at 18.5kg one person can usually carry it in. Because it is already built, measure your doorways before ordering: the chair is 72cm wide and 75cm deep, so it should pass through a standard internal door, but tight turns on stairs or in narrow hallways are worth checking.

Alfie chair FAQs
Does the Alfie chair need assembling?
No. It is delivered fully assembled, so it is ready to use as soon as it is unpacked.
What is the frame made of?
The frame is solid ash, a dense hardwood, in a washed oak finish. The wood is exposed on the arms, sides and legs as part of the design.
What colour is the fabric?
A soft grey linen-mix with a gentle woven texture. In natural light it can look slightly blue-grey, so it suits both cool and warm colour schemes.
Will it fit through my door?
The chair measures 72cm wide, 75cm deep and 79cm high, and arrives built. Most standard internal doors will take it, but please measure doorways, hallways and stair turns before ordering.
Where do you deliver?
Delivery is free to mainland England and mainland Wales, including Anglesey. We do not deliver to Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight or the Isles of Scilly.
