The Redford with Arms is the armed version of our deep-seated Redford futon sofa bed. Adding arms changes what the piece does in a room: it reads as a proper sofa rather than a futon, and it gives you something to lean against. You choose sloped or square arms, so the same frame can be made to sit comfortably in a traditional room or a contemporary one.

Like the rest of the made-to-order range, nothing is built until you order it. You specify the size, the arm shape, the fabric and whether the mattress is foam or pocket sprung.

Sloped arms or square arms

This is a styling decision rather than a comfort one — both are the same height and the same internal width. Sloped arms curve away from the seat and soften the outline; they suit a room with rounded or traditional furniture. Square arms are straight-sided and give a sharper, more contemporary block shape. If you are matching an existing suite, match the arm shape to what you already own.

A note on how the arms are built

This is worth knowing before you order. The arms on this model are decorative rather than structural. They are bracketed to the frame and sit with a deliberate gap between the arm and the body of the sofa — that gap is what allows the back to fold down to the bed position without fouling the arms. The arms are not designed to be sat on or leaned on with your full weight, and the brackets may occasionally need nipping up to keep the arms sitting square. It is a two-minute job with a spanner, and it is the trade-off for having a sofa bed that both has arms and folds flat.

Choosing your size

• Small Double — 136cm wide overall. A comfortable two-seater and a small double sleeping surface.
• Double — 156cm wide overall. A generous two-seater and a full double sleeping surface.

Note that these widths include the arms, so a Redford with Arms takes up more wall than the armless Redford of the same mattress size. If wall space is the binding constraint, the armless Redford Sofa Bed gives you the same sleeping width in a narrower footprint, and is also available as a single.

Foam or pocket sprung

Foam or pocket sprung

This is the choice that matters most and the one people get wrong.

Foam is firmer, lighter, folds away more easily and costs less. It is the right answer for occasional use — a spare bed for visitors a few times a year.

Pocket sprung costs more and adds weight to the folding action, but it sleeps considerably better because the springs move independently under you. If anyone is going to sleep on this regularly — a lodger, a student home for the holidays, a partner who snores — pay the difference.

Fabric

Fourteen colourways across four ranges. Fergus (Boulder, Hawk, Moon) is a soft flat weave in muted neutrals. Piero (Spring, Thunderstorm, Zinc) is a textured two-tone weave; Thunderstorm is a deep slate blue. Seoul (Aspen, Monsoon, Olivine, Tangelo) carries the stronger colours. Sunningdale (Granite, Midnight, Olive, Saffron) is the densest and hardest-wearing — Granite a mid-grey, Midnight a deep navy, Olive a deep green, Saffron a warm gold.

Ask us for swatches before you order. On a made-to-order piece there is no sensible way to change your mind after the event, and fabric is the one thing a screen will mislead you about.

Bolster cushions are sold separately on this model and are not included in the price shown. Tell us when you order and we will add them to the same delivery.

Measuring up

Measure before you order

A sofa bed has two footprints — folded and open — and the second one is the one people forget. Measure the space it will occupy as a sofa, then measure again allowing for the bed extending forward into the room. Check there is nothing in the way at floor level: a coffee table, a rug edge, a radiator.

Then measure your narrowest doorway, diagonally as well as straight across, and the turn at the top of the stairs, which is usually the real obstacle rather than the door itself.

This sofa bed is made to order and is delivered within 4 to 6 weeks from the date you place your order. It is built to your choice of fabric, size, mattress and frame after you order, rather than picked off a shelf. That is why the wait exists and it is also why you get the exact combination you want rather than the one that happened to be in stock.

If you need a sofa bed sooner than six weeks, tell us before ordering and we will point you at what we hold in stock instead.

Delivery

Delivered free to mainland England and Wales. We do not currently deliver to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland or the offshore islands.

Questions we are asked most

Why is there a gap between the arm and the seat?

It is deliberate. The back of this sofa bed folds down flat to make the bed, and it needs clearance to do that. Closing the gap would stop the mechanism working. Every armed futon sofa bed of this type has it.

Can I sit on the arm?

No. The arms are decorative and bracketed to the frame rather than built into it. Treat them as something to lean an elbow on, not something to perch on.

Which is better, sloped or square?

Neither is better — they are the same size and the same comfort. Choose sloped for a softer, more traditional outline and square for a sharper contemporary one, or match whatever you already have in the room.

Is the Redford with Arms suitable as an everyday bed?

With the pocket sprung mattress, yes. Foam is the right choice for occasional guest use; pocket sprung is what to order if someone will sleep on it regularly, because it holds its support rather than settling into a hollow.

Why does it take 4 to 6 weeks?

Nothing is made until you order. The frame is built, the arms are made in your chosen shape, the mattress is filled and the cover is upholstered to your specification, then it is delivered direct. That is the trade-off for getting exactly the combination you want.
