Description

The Redford Sofabed is a made-to-order futon sofa bed with a deeper, softer seat than most futons and a simple fold-flat action. It is the model to look at if the sofa bed in question is going to be used as a sofa most of the time — at 97cm deep it sits you properly back into it rather than perching you on the edge, and the 82cm back gives real support behind the shoulders.

Everything about the Redford is specified at the point of order: size, fabric, and whether the mattress is foam or pocket sprung. Fourteen upholstery colourways are available, which is a wider choice than anything sold from stock.

Choosing your size

• Single — 76cm wide. A single seat by day and a single sleeping surface by night. Suits a study, a box room or a narrow alcove.
• Small Double — 122cm wide. A comfortable two-seater and a small double bed.
• Double — 137cm wide. A generous two-seater and a full double sleeping surface.

Kyoto do not publish an opened length for the Redford. If floor space in front of the sofa is tight, contact us before you order and we will confirm the open footprint with the manufacturer rather than have you guess.

Foam or pocket sprung

Foam or pocket sprung

This is the choice that matters most and the one people get wrong.

Foam is firmer, lighter, folds away more easily and costs less. It is the right answer for occasional use — a spare bed for visitors a few times a year.

Pocket sprung costs more and adds weight to the folding action, but it sleeps considerably better because the springs move independently under you. If anyone is going to sleep on this regularly — a lodger, a student home for the holidays, a partner who snores — pay the difference.

Fabric

Fourteen colourways across four fabric ranges. Fergus (Boulder, Hawk, Moon) is a soft flat weave in muted neutrals. Piero (Spring, Thunderstorm, Zinc) is a textured weave with a two-tone depth; Thunderstorm is a deep slate blue. Seoul (Aspen, Monsoon, Olivine, Tangelo) carries the stronger colours in the range. Sunningdale (Granite, Midnight, Olive, Saffron) is the densest and hardest-wearing of the four — Granite is a mid-grey, Midnight a deep navy, Olive a deep green and Saffron a warm gold.

Fabric is the one thing a screen cannot be trusted with. Ask us for swatches of the colourways you are weighing up and we will get them to you before you commit — on a made-to-order piece there is no sensible way to change your mind afterwards.

Bolsters

Bolster cushions are sold separately on the Redford. They are not included in the prices shown here. If you want them, tell us when you order and we will add them to the same order so they arrive together.

Measuring up

Measure before you order

A sofa bed has two footprints — folded and open — and the second one is the one people forget. Measure the space it will occupy as a sofa, then measure again allowing for the bed extending forward into the room. Check there is nothing in the way at floor level: a coffee table, a rug edge, a radiator.

Then measure your narrowest doorway, diagonally as well as straight across, and the turn at the top of the stairs, which is usually the real obstacle rather than the door itself.

Made to order — 4 to 6 weeks

This sofa bed is made to order and is delivered within 4 to 6 weeks from the date you place your order. It is built to your choice of fabric, size, mattress and frame after you order, rather than picked off a shelf. That is why the wait exists and it is also why you get the exact combination you want rather than the one that happened to be in stock.

If you need a sofa bed sooner than six weeks, tell us before ordering and we will point you at what we hold in stock instead.

Delivery

Delivered free to mainland England and Wales. We do not currently deliver to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland or the offshore islands.

Questions we are asked most

Is the Redford comfortable enough to use as an everyday sofa?

That is what it is built for. At 97cm deep it is noticeably deeper than a standard futon, which changes how it sits — you sit back into it rather than on it. If the piece is going to spend most of its life as a sofa and only occasionally as a bed, the Redford is the one to look at first.

Can it be slept on every night?

Yes, with the pocket sprung mattress. Foam is the right choice for a guest bed used a handful of times a year; for nightly use the pocket sprung version holds its support far better and will not develop a hollow where the weight goes.

Are the bolster cushions included?

No. Bolsters are a separate item on this model and are not included in the price shown. Ask us when you order and we will add them so everything arrives on the same delivery.

Can I see the fabric before I order?

Yes, and on a made-to-order piece we would rather you did. Tell us which colourways you are considering and we will arrange swatches.

Why does it take 4 to 6 weeks?

Nothing is made until the order is placed. The frame is built, the mattress is filled and the cover is upholstered to your specification, then delivered direct to you. That is the trade-off for choosing the exact combination you want rather than taking whatever is in a warehouse.
