Luca Wingback Armchair

A wingback reworked in contemporary lines. The wings are still there — and they still do what wings were invented to do, which is shelter your head from a draught and give you something to lean against when you fall asleep — but they are curved rather than square, with pleated accents across the backrest instead of the buttoning a traditional wingback would carry.

Piping runs along the arms and around the seat cushion, which is the detail that keeps the shape legible. Without it a curved, plush chair loses its outline.

At 102 centimetres high this is the tallest chair in the Kyoto range by a distance, and height is the whole argument for a wingback. Every other accent chair here supports you to the shoulder. This one supports your head.

Where it works

Beside a fireplace is the traditional answer and still the best one. In a bedroom it gives a proper reading chair. In a living room it is the seat older visitors will choose, because a high back and firm arms make it far easier to get out of than a low lounging chair.

Caring for chenille

Chenille is a pile fabric — short tufts in a woven base. It is soft and forgiving of light marks, and the pile flattens where it is used most. Vacuum weekly with a soft upholstery head, brush the pile back one way if it looks patchy, and blot spills rather than rubbing.

Is it easy to get out of? Easier than most. The high back and firm arms give you something to push against, which low lounging chairs do not.

Do the wings actually do anything? Yes — they block draughts and support your head if you doze. That is what they were for originally and it still works.

Is the denim colour strong? It is a soft mid-blue rather than a bright one. Ask us for a swatch if the exact shade matters.

Is it comfortable for a whole evening? This is the chair in the range best suited to it.
