Description

The Kendle is a made-to-order sofa bed with a low, contemporary profile — 69cm to the top of the back, which is unusually low for a sofa bed and is what makes it work under a window or against a half-panelled wall. The backrest folds down level with the seat to give a flat sleeping surface of 113 x 176cm.

It is made to order in fourteen upholstery colourways with a choice of light or dark wooden legs, so it can be specified to a room rather than bought off a shelf.

Read the sleeping size before you order

The Kendle sleeps 113 x 176cm. The width is between a single and a small double, and the length is shorter than a standard UK bed — 176cm is about 5ft 9in. For most guests that is fine. For anyone over roughly 5ft 8in it will be tight, and we would rather tell you that here than have you find out on the night. If length matters, look at our Harper Sofa Bed or Redford Sofa Bed instead — both give a 192cm sleeping length.

Where the Kendle works

The low back is the point of this piece. At 69cm high it sits below most window sills, which means it can go under a window without blocking the light or looking wrong from outside. It is also 80cm deep as a sofa — shallow — so it suits a narrow room, a landing, a garden room or a study where a deeper sofa would dominate. At 164cm wide it is a comfortable two-seater.

Fabric and legs

Fourteen colourways across four ranges. Fergus (Boulder, Hawk, Moon) is a soft flat weave in muted neutrals. Piero (Spring, Thunderstorm, Zinc) is a textured two-tone weave; Thunderstorm is a deep slate blue. Seoul (Aspen, Monsoon, Olivine, Tangelo) carries the stronger colours in the range. Sunningdale (Granite, Midnight, Olive, Saffron) is the densest and hardest-wearing — Granite a mid-grey, Midnight a deep navy, Olive a deep green, Saffron a warm gold.

Legs come in light wood or dark wood. On a low piece like this the legs are more visible than usual, so it is worth matching them to your flooring rather than to the fabric.

Ask us for swatches before you commit. On a made-to-order piece there is no sensible way to change your mind afterwards.

Measuring up

Measure before you order

A sofa bed has two footprints — folded and open — and the second one is the one people forget. Measure the space it will occupy as a sofa, then measure again allowing for the bed extending forward into the room. Check there is nothing in the way at floor level: a coffee table, a rug edge, a radiator.

Then measure your narrowest doorway, diagonally as well as straight across, and the turn at the top of the stairs, which is usually the real obstacle rather than the door itself.

For the Kendle: 164cm of wall as a sofa, 80cm of floor depth closed, and enough clear floor in front for the sleeping surface to open to 176cm from the back.

This sofa bed is made to order and is delivered within 4 to 6 weeks from the date you place your order. It is built to your choice of fabric, size, mattress and frame after you order, rather than picked off a shelf. That is why the wait exists and it is also why you get the exact combination you want rather than the one that happened to be in stock.

If you need a sofa bed sooner than six weeks, tell us before ordering and we will point you at what we hold in stock instead.

Delivery

Delivered free to mainland England and Wales. We do not currently deliver to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland or the offshore islands.

Questions we are asked most

Will the Kendle fit under a window?

That is what the low back is for. At 69cm it clears most standard sill heights, but measure yours before you order — sill heights vary a great deal between houses and we would rather you checked.

Is 176cm long enough to sleep on?

For someone up to around 5ft 8in, comfortably. Taller than that and it will be tight. If the sofa bed is for regular adult use rather than occasional guests, choose one of our 192cm models instead.

Is it suitable as an everyday bed?

We would call it an occasional bed rather than an everyday one. The Kendle is built around a slim, low profile, which is what makes it fit where other sofa beds do not; that same slimness means it is not the piece to choose if someone is sleeping on it every night. For nightly use, look at the Harper or Redford with a pocket sprung mattress.

Which leg colour should I choose?

Match the floor rather than the sofa. On a piece this low the legs sit in your eyeline against the floor, so light wood on light flooring and dark wood on dark flooring will look settled; the opposite will draw attention to the legs.

Why does it take 4 to 6 weeks?

Nothing is made until you order. The frame is built and the cover is upholstered in your chosen fabric, then delivered direct to you. That is the trade-off for choosing the exact combination you want.
