Description
A low-profile anti-allergy mattress made for bunk beds
The Jay-Be Simply Kids Anti-Allergy Bunk Mattress solves the problem most parents meet when they buy a bunk bed: an ordinary mattress is too deep for the top bunk. At 16 cm deep, this one sits low enough to leave proper guard-rail height above the sleeping surface, while still giving a growing child a supportive spring core and a cover treated to discourage dust mites. It is foam-free, made in Britain and arrives rolled in a box, so it is easy to carry upstairs and lift onto a top bunk.
It comes in three sizes: a standard UK Single (90 × 190 cm) for most British bunk and cabin beds, a European Single (90 × 200 cm) for imported and Scandinavian-style frames, and a Small Double (120 × 190 cm) for triple-sleeper and wide bottom-bunk beds. Measure the inside of your bed frame before you order: UK and European singles are the same width but differ by 10 cm in length.
Why depth matters on a bunk bed
Bunk beds sold in the UK are built to the safety standard BS EN 747-1. Jay-Be’s guidance, which we repeat here because it matters, is that the top of the mattress should sit at least 160 mm (16 cm) below the upper edge of the safety barrier. A 20 cm or 25 cm mattress can eat into that margin and make the guard rail ineffective. Check the maximum mattress depth printed in your bunk bed’s instructions; most specify 15 to 18 cm, which this mattress meets.
The lower depth also makes the mattress lighter: the single weighs about 11 kg packed, so one adult can manage it on a ladder-access top bunk and children can help change the sheets without wrestling a heavy mattress.
What is inside
- Purotex™ probiotic-treated cover: the knitted fabric carries naturally occurring probiotics that break down the allergens dust mites feed on, helping to keep the sleeping surface fresher between washes of the bedding.
- Deep rebound e-Fibre™ comfort layer: a springy fibre filling made partly from recycled bottles, giving a soft top without any foam.
- High-density e-Fibre™ insulator layer: stops the springs being felt through the surface.
- Medium-firm spring core: spreads a child’s weight evenly so the mattress supports a growing back rather than sagging in the middle.
- High-density e-Fibre™ foundation layer: protects the underside of the springs from the bed slats.
Because it contains no foam, it breathes well and stays cooler than a foam mattress, which helps children who run hot at night. The fabric is certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, and fire safety is met with a salt-based treatment rather than added chemical finishes.
Who it suits
It is designed for children who sleep on bunk beds, high sleepers, mid sleepers and cabin beds where depth is limited. It is also a good choice for any child with a dust-mite allergy, asthma or eczema who needs a fresher sleeping surface, and for parents who want a foam-free, British-made mattress at a sensible price. If your child’s bed is a standard single with no guard rail, the deeper Simply Kids Anti-Allergy Sprung Mattress (18 cm) is an alternative. For a non-allergy bunk mattress, compare the Jay-Be Bunk e-Sprung and the pocket-sprung Bunk e-Pocket.

Setting it up
Carry the roll to the bedroom before opening it, and unroll it on the bottom bunk or the floor rather than on the top bunk. Cut the outer wrapping carefully, keeping blades away from the fabric, and let the mattress open. It starts to recover straight away; give it 24 to 48 hours in a ventilated room to reach its full 16 cm before a child sleeps on it. Then lift it onto the bed and check the gap to the top of the guard rail. Rotate it head to foot every few weeks for the first three months so the fillings settle evenly, and use a washable protector.
Delivery
Delivery is free to mainland England and mainland Wales, including Anglesey. The mattress is delivered rolled and boxed, so it fits through narrow doorways and up tight staircases. We cannot deliver to Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight or the Isles of Scilly.
Frequently asked questions
Is this mattress safe for the top bunk?
Yes, provided the top of the mattress sits at least 16 cm below the upper edge of the safety barrier, which is the requirement Jay-Be gives for bunk beds built to BS EN 747-1. At 16 cm deep it suits most UK bunk beds; check your bed’s instructions for its maximum mattress depth.
Which size do I need: UK Single or European Single?
Measure the inside of the bed frame. A UK Single is 90 × 190 cm and fits most beds bought in Britain. A European Single is 90 × 200 cm and fits many imported, IKEA-style and Scandinavian frames. Using a 190 cm mattress in a 200 cm frame leaves a gap a child’s foot can slip into.
Will it help with my child’s dust-mite allergy?
It is designed to help. The Purotex™ cover breaks down the allergens dust mites feed on and the fillings are hypoallergenic and foam-free. No mattress removes allergens entirely, so also use a washable protector and wash bedding at 60°C.
How firm is it?
Medium. That suits most children from about three years old to early teens: supportive enough for a growing spine, with a soft fibre top so it does not feel hard.
Does it contain foam?
No. It is 100% foam-free, which keeps it breathable and avoids the smell some foam mattresses give off when new.
