Brodie Coffee Table

The Brodie range is built from solid mango wood with a pale, lightly limed finish and thick, softly squared edges. It is a quieter design than the parquet ranges — no pattern, no contrast metalwork — and it relies instead on the weight of the timber and the openness of the grain. In a room with a lot going on, that is usually the more useful choice.

Mango is a fast-growing timber, which is why it is affordable in solid form at all, and why the grain is open and varied rather than tight and uniform. Expect colour to move across a single piece.

Getting the size right

A coffee table works best at roughly two thirds the length of the sofa it serves, so 120cm suits a three seater and a generous two. At 40 centimetres this one sits low — a little below most sofa seat heights — which suits a relaxed room where people put their feet up more than they put their laptops down.

Leave 40 to 45cm between the sofa and the table. Any closer and it blocks the route past; much further and you cannot reach a drink without standing.

Questions people ask

Is the pale finish painted? No — it is a light lime-effect finish over solid wood, so the grain still reads through it.

Will it show marks more than a dark table? Ring marks and dark spills show more on pale timber. Use coasters and blot spills rather than letting them sit.

How heavy is it? Solid wood at 120cm is a two-person lift.

Does it match the rest of the Brodie range? The lamp table, console and sideboard share the finish and the edge detail. Tone varies naturally between pieces.

Is 40cm too low? It is lower than average, which suits deep sofas. If your sofa seat is high, the lamp table at 50cm may serve you better alongside it.
