Description
A shorty mattress for bunks, cabin beds and small rooms
The Jay-Be Simply Kids Foam-Free Sprung Mattress in shorty size measures 75 × 175 cm, about 2 ft 6 in × 5 ft 9 in. That is the size used by many children’s bunk beds, mid-sleepers, cabin beds and space-saving kids’ frames that are shorter and narrower than a standard UK single. If your child’s bed takes a shorty, a single mattress will not fit, and a mattress that is too small leaves gaps that small arms and legs can slip into. This one is made to the exact shorty size.
It has an open-coil spring unit with a medium-firm feel, which gives a growing child even support from head to toe. Over the springs sits a high-density insulator, so the coils cannot be felt, and then layers of breathable rebound e-Fibre™ for cushioning. There is no foam in it at all. Air passes through the fibre layers, which helps the mattress stay cool and dry and stops it holding on to warmth and moisture the way foam can.
Why parents choose it
- The right depth for bunks. At 16 cm deep it sits well below the guard rail on most bunk and high-sleeper frames. Always check your bed maker’s maximum mattress depth.
- Foam-free and hypoallergenic. The comfort layers are e-Fibre™ rather than foam, a good choice for children with allergies or sensitive skin.
- Tested fabric. The cover fabric is OEKO-TEX® certified, meaning it has been tested for harmful substances.
- Salt-based fire retardant. Fire safety is met with a natural salt-based treatment.
- Made in the UK at a zero-to-landfill factory, to British and European safety standards.
- Five-year manufacturer guarantee.

Unpacking and care
Take the roll to the child’s room before opening it. Cut the wrapping carefully, keeping blades away from the cover, and let the mattress unroll on the bed. Leave it for 24 to 48 hours in a ventilated room to recover its full shape before use. Rotate it head to toe every few weeks for the first three months and then every three months, and use a washable mattress protector to deal with spills and accidents.
Delivery
Free delivery to mainland England and mainland Wales, including Anglesey, by courier to your door. The mattress arrives vacuum-packed and rolled, so it is light enough to carry upstairs and fits through any doorway. We do not deliver to Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight or the Isles of Scilly.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a shorty mattress?
75 cm wide and 175 cm long, roughly 2 ft 6 in × 5 ft 9 in. A standard UK single is 90 × 190 cm, so measure the inside of the bed frame before ordering.
Is it suitable for the top bunk?
Yes. At 16 cm deep it suits most bunk beds. The top of the mattress must sit at least 16 cm below the top of the guard rail, so check the depth limit printed on your bunk bed instructions.
What age is it for?
It is designed for children who have moved out of a cot or toddler bed into a shorty-size frame, usually from about three years old upwards.
Is it good for a child with allergies?
The fillings are foam-free and hypoallergenic, and the fabric is OEKO-TEX® certified. For a child with dust-mite allergies, also look at the Jay-Be Simply Kids Anti-Allergy range.
Does it smell when unpacked?
Any packing smell fades within a day or two in a ventilated room. Because there is no foam, there is no foam off-gassing.
