Description

The Jacob Scroll Arm Sofabed is a made-to-order sofa bed with a curved scroll arm and turned wooden legs — a traditional shape rather than a modern one. It is the piece to choose if the room it is going into has older furniture in it, or if you simply prefer a sofa that does not look like a sofa bed.

Like everything in our made-to-order range, the Jacob is not built until you order it. You choose the chenille colourway and whether the mattress is foam or pocket sprung, and it is made to that specification.

The scroll arm

A scroll arm curves outward and rolls over at the top, the way the arm of a chesterfield or a classic club sofa does. It is a softer, more furnished outline than a straight arm, and it sits comfortably alongside period furniture, wooden floors and darker colour schemes. Paired with the turned wooden legs, the Jacob reads as a sofa first and a bed second.

Foam or pocket sprung

This is the choice that matters most and the one people get wrong.

Foam is firmer, lighter, folds away more easily and costs less. It is the right answer for occasional use — a spare bed for visitors a few times a year.

Pocket sprung costs more and adds weight to the folding action, but it sleeps considerably better because the springs move independently under you. If anyone is going to sleep on this regularly — a lodger, a student home for the holidays, a partner who snores — pay the difference.

Seoul chenille

The Jacob is upholstered in Seoul chenille, a soft, short-pile fabric with a slight sheen that catches the light and gives the piece more depth than a flat weave. Three colourways are offered: Aspen, Monsoon and Olivine.

Chenille is a warm, tactile fabric and it does show a nap — brush it one way and it looks lighter, the other way and it looks darker. Most people like that; a few do not. It is another reason to ask us for a swatch before you commit, which we are happy to arrange.

Dimensions

Kyoto do not publish measurements for the Jacob. Rather than print a number we cannot stand behind, we will confirm the exact sofa and bed dimensions with the manufacturer on request — contact us before you order and we will get them for you in writing. We would rather do that than have you take delivery of something that does not fit.

Measuring up

Measure before you order

A sofa bed has two footprints — folded and open — and the second one is the one people forget. Measure the space it will occupy as a sofa, then measure again allowing for the bed extending forward into the room. Check there is nothing in the way at floor level: a coffee table, a rug edge, a radiator.

Then measure your narrowest doorway, diagonally as well as straight across, and the turn at the top of the stairs, which is usually the real obstacle rather than the door itself.

Made to order — 4 to 6 weeks

This sofa bed is made to order and is delivered within 4 to 6 weeks from the date you place your order. It is built to your choice of fabric, size, mattress and frame after you order, rather than picked off a shelf. That is why the wait exists and it is also why you get the exact combination you want rather than the one that happened to be in stock.

If you need a sofa bed sooner than six weeks, tell us before ordering and we will point you at what we hold in stock instead.

Delivery

Delivered free to mainland England and Wales. We do not currently deliver to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland or the offshore islands.

Questions we are asked most

What is the difference between the Jacob and the James?

The arm and the leg. The Jacob has a scroll arm and turned traditional wooden legs; the James has a gently flared arm and square contemporary block legs. Everything else — the fabric choice, the mattress options and the lead time — is the same. Choose by which one suits the room you are putting it in.

Why are the dimensions not listed?

Because the manufacturer has not published them for this model and we will not invent them. Ask us and we will get the measurements confirmed in writing before you order.

Foam or pocket sprung — which should I choose?

Foam if it is a spare bed used a few times a year. Pocket sprung if anyone is going to sleep on it regularly, because the springs keep their support where foam eventually settles.

Can I get a fabric swatch?

Yes, and on a made-to-order piece we would rather you did. Chenille in particular photographs differently from how it looks in a room. Tell us which colourways you are considering and we will arrange it.

Why does it take 4 to 6 weeks?

Nothing is made until the order is placed. The frame is built, the mattress is filled and the cover is upholstered to your specification, then it is delivered direct to you.
