Description

The Elliot is a made-to-order sofa bed at the top of our Kyoto range — a properly upholstered sofa that happens to convert, rather than a futon dressed up as one. You choose the arm shape and the fabric, and it is built to that specification.

Choosing the arm

The Elliot is offered in three arm shapes, and it is the decision that changes the character of the piece more than anything else.

• French Seam — the softest of the three. The upholstery is seamed so the arm reads as a single rolled form, which suits a traditional or transitional room.
• Modern Seam — a cleaner, flatter arm with the seam run to emphasise the line rather than the shape. The middle option, and the one that sits happily in most rooms.
• Square — a straight-sided block arm. The sharpest of the three and the right choice in a contemporary room with straight lines elsewhere.

All three are the same price and the same size. Choose by the room, not the budget.

Fabric

Fourteen colourways across four ranges. Fergus (Boulder, Hawk, Moon) is a soft flat weave in muted neutrals. Piero (Spring, Thunderstorm, Zinc) is a textured two-tone weave; Thunderstorm is a deep slate blue. Seoul (Aspen, Monsoon, Olivine, Tangelo) carries the stronger colours. Sunningdale (Granite, Midnight, Olive, Saffron) is the densest and hardest-wearing — Granite a mid-grey, Midnight a deep navy, Olive a deep green, Saffron a warm gold.

At this price we would strongly encourage you to see the fabric in your own light before ordering. Tell us the colourways you are considering and we will send swatches.

Dimensions

Kyoto do not publish measurements for the Elliot. We will not print numbers we cannot stand behind, so if the space is tight, contact us before you order and we will get the sofa and bed dimensions confirmed by the manufacturer in writing. It takes us a day and it removes the only real risk in buying a made-to-order piece.

Measuring up

Measure before you order

A sofa bed has two footprints — folded and open — and the second one is the one people forget. Measure the space it will occupy as a sofa, then measure again allowing for the bed extending forward into the room. Check there is nothing in the way at floor level: a coffee table, a rug edge, a radiator.

Then measure your narrowest doorway, diagonally as well as straight across, and the turn at the top of the stairs, which is usually the real obstacle rather than the door itself.

Made to order — 4 to 6 weeks

This sofa bed is made to order and is delivered within 4 to 6 weeks from the date you place your order. It is built to your choice of fabric, size, mattress and frame after you order, rather than picked off a shelf. That is why the wait exists and it is also why you get the exact combination you want rather than the one that happened to be in stock.

If you need a sofa bed sooner than six weeks, tell us before ordering and we will point you at what we hold in stock instead.

Delivery

Delivered free to mainland England and Wales. We do not currently deliver to the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland or the offshore islands.

Questions we are asked most

Which arm shape should I choose?

Match what is already in the room. French Seam alongside traditional or upholstered furniture, Square alongside straight-lined modern furniture, Modern Seam when you are not sure. They are the same price and the same size, so there is no penalty either way.

Why are the dimensions not listed?

The manufacturer has not published them for this model and we will not invent a number. Ask us and we will get them confirmed in writing before you order.

Can I see the fabric first?

Yes, and at this price we would rather you did. Tell us which colourways you are weighing up and we will arrange swatches.

Is it in stock?

No, and it is not meant to be. Every Elliot is built after the order is placed, which is how you get to choose the arm and the fabric. Allow 4 to 6 weeks.

Why is the Elliot more expensive than the rest of the range?

Because it is a different class of piece. The frame, the upholstery and the finish are a step up from the futon-based models, and the arm is made to your chosen shape rather than being one standard part. If you want a sofa bed that reads as a sofa in a main living room rather than a spare room, this is the one.
