The Carter Sofa Bed is a fold out sofa bed built on foam rather than a sprung frame, designed for rooms that have to do two jobs at once. The backrest drops through a series of reclined positions on a click-clack mechanism, so it works as an upright seat, a low lounger, or a completely flat sleeping surface — without lifting a frame or pulling out a metal action.

It is built from foam rather than a sprung base. That keeps the weight low enough to move between rooms single-handed, and it is why Carter sits at the affordable end of the sofa bed market. A removable back cushion is included.

Which size fold out sofa bed should you choose?

Carter comes in two widths. The Single suits a home office, box room or study where a full sofa will not fit but you still want a bed for the occasional guest. The Double gives a genuine two-person sleeping surface and works better as a spare-room primary bed.

Both share the same mechanism, the same foam construction and the same two chenille finishes.

Taupe is a warm grey-beige that reads as a neutral in almost any room. Olive is a soft muted green — more of a decision, and it works particularly well against white or pale walls. Chenille has a short, dense pile that resists the flattening you get with a flat weave.

If you need a bed for every night of the year, a sprung sofa bed or a conventional bed frame and mattress is the better choice.
