Great Customer Ratings

Furniture that is cared for properly lasts years longer and stays comfortable for longer. None of this takes much effort — most of it is a few minutes every couple of months. Following this guidance also helps keep your guarantee intact.
Let it settle. A new mattress can feel firmer than the one it replaced. Give it a few weeks — your body adjusts, and the fillings settle into shape. Small dips in the sleeping area are normal settlement, not a fault.
Air it before you make it up. Unwrap your mattress and leave it to breathe for a few hours before putting bedding on it. Any packaging smell will disappear.
Turn and rotate it. Rotate head-to-foot every two to four weeks for the first three months, then every couple of months after that. If your mattress is double-sided, flip it over as well. Pillow-top and one-sided mattresses should be rotated only, never flipped — turning them puts your weight on the wrong side.
Use a protector. A washable mattress protector is the single best thing you can buy for your mattress. It takes the moisture and marks that would otherwise reach the fillings, and most guarantees are void once a mattress is stained.
Don’t sit on the edge. Perching on the same spot on the edge every day compresses the border long before the rest of the mattress wears.
Keep it dry. Never use a mattress that has become damp, and don’t soak a stain. Blot spills with a barely damp cloth and a little mild detergent, then let the area dry completely with the window open.
Check the fixings after the first month and once or twice a year after that — frames loosen slightly as they settle, and a loose bolt is the usual cause of a creak. Tighten by hand rather than over-tightening with a driver.
Divan bases should sit on a flat, level floor. On thick carpet, castors can sink unevenly; glides are the better choice.
Keep beds out of direct sunlight where you can. Strong sun fades fabric and dries out timber and veneers.
Vacuum regularly. Use the upholstery attachment on a low setting, every week or two. Grit works its way into the weave and cuts the fibres — that is what wears fabric out, more than sitting on it.
Plump and rotate cushions. Fibre and foam cushions need plumping after use to keep their shape. If your cushions lift out, swap their positions every few weeks so they wear evenly.
Deal with spills immediately. Blot — never rub, which pushes the spill into the fibres and can felt the surface. Work inwards from the edge of the mark so you don’t spread it. Use a clean, colourfast white cloth.
Test before you treat. If you use any cleaning product, try it first on a hidden area, such as the underside or the back. Avoid solvents, bleach and washing-machine cleaning on covers unless the label specifically allows it.
Open the mechanism fully and firmly in one movement rather than in stages — half-opening puts the load on the wrong part of the frame. Take the cushions off first, and make sure the area in front is clear before you pull.
If your sofa bed is used regularly as a bed, treat its mattress like any other: use a protector, and air it before you close the unit. Closing a sofa bed on damp bedding is the most common cause of musty smell.
Store it closed with nothing heavy on top.
Beds and upholstery don’t like extremes. Keep furniture away from radiators and open fires, and try not to let a room sit cold and unventilated — condensation finds its way into fillings. Opening a window for a few minutes each morning does more good than any product.
If you think there is a fault rather than normal settlement, contact us with your order number and a few photographs. Beds, mattresses and sofas we supply carry a two-year guarantee, and Jay-Be sofa bed frames carry the manufacturer’s lifetime frame guarantee.
